Sten Ebbesen

Sten Ebbesen (b. 1946) is a renowned Danish classical philologist and medieval scholar. He served at the University of Copenhagen from 1972 to 2016 and now holds the title of Professor Emeritus. A leading authority on European medieval philosophy, Ebbesen has made significant contributions to the study of medieval logic. His research has a particular focus on Danish medieval philosophy, and he served as the chief editor of the Corpus Philosophorum Danicorum Medii Aeviseries from its inception in 1982 until its conclusion in 2021. Ebbesen’s notable works include Commentators and Commentaries on Aristotle's Sophistici Elenchi (1981, his doctoral dissertation) and Danish Medieval Philosophy, ca. 1170–1536 (2002, the first volume of The History of Danish Philosophy). His distinguished career has earned him honorary doctorates from the Universities of Gothenburg and Bologna. In 2017, he was honored with the prestigious Gad Rausing Prize.
